Activated carbon coupled with advanced biological wastewater treatment: A review of the enhancement in micropollutant removal

This study consists of a review on the removal efficiencies wide spectrum micropollutants (MPs) in biological treatment (mainly membrane bioreactor) coupled with activated carbon (AC) (AC added bioreactor or followed by an AC unit, acting as post treatment). It focuses how presence may promote MPs and effects dissolved organic matter (DOM) wastewater. Removal data collected are analysed versus dose if powdered is bioreactor, function empty bed contact time case granular (GAC) column treatment. Moreover, enhancement macropollutant (organic matter, nitrogen phosphorus compounds) well mitigation effect towards fouling and, finally, sludge properties change AC. To sum up, it was found that improves most MPs, favouring their sorption surface, promoted different functional groups then enhancing degradation processes. DOM strong competitor but transformation GAC biologically thus all Finally, increases floc strength its settling characteristics potential.
